Welcome! My name is Carolyn Birdsall and I’m an Associate Professor of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
I’m an interdisciplinary researcher, trained in History and Media/Communications. My expertise is in Radio & Sound Studies, Media History & Archival Studies, Heritage & Memory Studies, and Environmental/Spatial Humanities.
My new book, Radiophilia (2023), explores the love for radio, from early wireless to digital audio. It brings together radio/podcast studies with research on fans, affect & emotion, memory, heritage & archives, technology, design & material culture.
I also lead the ASCA Cities Project and the NWO-funded project TRACE (Tracking Radio Archival Collections in Europe, 1930-1960), which examines how European radio recordings were archived, circulated and re-used under conditions of war, occupation and reconstruction.
